Incident Description:
- Flights have reportedly been suspended at Khartoum International Airport (KRT) following reports of heavy gunfire in Khartoum Jan. 14. It is currently unclear if the closure is linked to gunfire in the vicinity of the airport or if security services have closed the airspace as some local sources have reported.
- As of 1700, all departures are canceled or heavily delayed, and inbound flights have diverted or returned to their departure airports. Officials have not said when the airport will reopen.
- Gunfire had reportedly been prompted by members of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) protesting a perceived inadequate wage compensation in northern Khartoum. There have been no reported casualties. Additional security personnel are likely to deploy to the area in the coming hours. Further clashes are possible.
- Ground travel disruptions are also possible across Khartoum through Jan. 14.
